The existence of a water-mill in the parish of Hagworthingham
was recorded in the Domesday Book: The site of that original mill, however,
remains unknown, but Stockwith Mill is believed to date from somewhere before
the start of the seventeenth century. At that time the Mill was part of
the Harrington Hall estate and it remained so until 1919 when it was sold
to the Weightman family of Sutton-on-Sea.
Later on the mechanism was converted to generate electricity and the giant
undershot water wheel was then in regular use until 1960. |
